How melt products work
Ice melt has to dissolve into a brine that lowers the freezing point of water. If the pavement and air are colder than the product can handle, crystals sit on the ice like gravel with better marketing. Labels list effective temperature ranges for a reason.
Edmonton regularly sees stretches where overnight lows sit far below what basic rock salt can manage. Plan for that instead of dumping more bags on inert ice.
Rock salt limits
Sodium chloride is cheap and common. It helps in milder cold and on fresh thin ice. It also corrodes metal, stresses concrete when overused, and leaves brine that can refreeze when temperatures crash again.
After a warm afternoon melt, a cold night can turn treated surfaces glassy. That is when people think salt "failed," when the weather simply moved past its useful range.
When sand wins
Sand and similar grit do not melt ice. They add friction so feet and tires can bite. In deep cold, that is often the safer immediate fix for steps, sidewalks, and lot entrances.

A practical combo approach
- Clear snow first so you are not melting a full blanket
- Apply melt in the temperature window on thin ice and high-traffic paths
- Switch to sand when products stop reacting
- Revisit after freeze-thaw nights when polished ice returns
