When to sand (and when salt is the wrong tool)

Sand right after a clear when the pavement still looks shiny, after freeze-thaw nights that glaze steps and lot lanes, and in deep cold when melt products sit on ice without dissolving. Morning openers for retail and offices often need a sand pass even if overnight snow stayed under a 5 cm commercial trigger, because packed ice from traffic is the real hazard.

Salt and stronger melts help in a milder temperature window on thin ice and high-traffic pads. Dumping more bags below the product rating wastes money and can leave brine that refreezes into a worse sheet. In those stretches we lean on grit for traction and come back with melt when the air and pavement warm enough for it to work. Residential clients often keep sand by the door for pets and save chemical melt for the public walk.

Clearing depth and ice work are separate decisions. A light residential trigger around 1 cm can still leave black ice on walks. A commercial 5 cm push can still need sand at the doors the same morning. If banks are shading a lane and feeding meltwater, pair sanding with hauling so ice does not keep reforming from the pile.
